The sheep book a handbook for the modern shepherd
I did not. Was my wife from rural roots and full of knowledge of things pastoral? She was not. My wife had taken up spinning and weaving, and we thought we should raise some animals, so sheep it was. I sat in on some courses in the agriculture college at my university, and we read what books we could lay hands on, but we were mighty ignorant of both theory and practice.
Oh, we had seen sheep; we had even sheared a sheep apiece at a clinic for 4-H kids, but that was about it. There are no reviews yet. A knowledgeable shepherd manages a flock in such a way as to provide an appropriate environment for all phases of the annual journey from breeding through pregnancy, lambing, growing of lambs, marketing of lamb and wools, and revitalization of the sheep for another cycle.
The Sheep Book guides the reader to working with the instincts of the sheep—treating them as animals with special talents and ways of behaving that can be engaged and directed. The reader is encouraged to learn from the sheep, for they are the best teachers of a successful shepherd. Get A Copy. Paperback , pages. More Details Original Title. Friend Reviews. I'd say it's an excellent reference for someone who already has sheep but definitely not a good starting point for those still in the early "consideration" stage. There's so much information and it does give you references to some other reading material that may be better suited for those interested, but want to know very basic specs for raising sheep. Wiltse joined his parents on the small farm they had recently purchased in southern Ohio. There, the Wiltses scratched out a living selling eggs, corn, and other farm goods at prices that were barely enough to keep the farm intact. In wry and often affecting prose, Wiltse recorded a year in the life of this quintessentially American place during the Great Depression.
