When state game wardens cite a hunter who is Native American, that case already is referred to the Cherokee legal system, said Chad Harsha, Cherokee secretary of natural resources. The cross-deputization agreement is separate from the hunting and fishing compact and will stay in effect once the compact expires, confirmed Micah Holmes, a spokesperson for the state Wildlife Conservation Department.

Hoskin signed an executive order Monday that will allow Harsha to regulate the hunting and fishing rules. What will change is how licensing works, one of the top two questions Harsha has received. Cherokee citizens are automatically granted licenses to hunt and fish within the reservation and can provide tribal identification as proof.

The other popular query is whether hunters have to buy game tags in advance. The Cherokee Nation and the state Wildlife Conservation Department signed a compact in that led to shared wildlife management standards, among other common conservation goals. That compact followed a separate hunting and fishing agreement in The Cherokee Nation agreed to buy at least , state hunting licenses to issue to its citizens, plus pay for annual administrative costs. Tribal and state wildlife management officials have worked together to secure federal grants and toward other goals, Harsha said.

Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt is asking the court to overturn the decision.
